Just one hour away from Rio de Janeiro in the mountainous region is the city of Petropolis, rich in tourist attractions. The tour includes the Summer Palace of Dom Pedro II, the Emperor’s favorite residence, where he spent the best moments of his life, now transformed into the Imperial Museum. Its construction in neoclassical style dates from 1845, and the style was determined by the monarch. The floor of the lobby, built in Carrara marble and black marble from Belgium, was added in 1854. The details stand out in jacaranda wood, cedar, and rosewood from the various provinces of the empire. The remains of the imperial family are found in the Cathedral, which was built in Gothic style.
