A New Rio Tradition Takes Root
The inauguration event wasn’t just about the tree; it featured a free concert and a vibrant gastronomic village, all designed to create a fresh holiday tradition for the Cidade Maravilhosa. Organizers are hoping this grand attraction will draw an astounding 650,000 visitors to the location.
The impressive floating tree stands at 80 meters tall and is adorned with over 2.3 million LED lights. It’s positioned about 100 meters from the shore, ensuring it can be admired along at least 700 meters of Botafogo Beach. Built to withstand winds up to 150 km/h, this marvel of engineering is as robust as it is beautiful.
International Ambition and Daily Spectacles
Abel Gomes, the creative director of the project for SRCOM, emphasized the ambitious goal of internationalizing Rio de Janeiro’s Christmas celebrations. “It has several incredible effects of light, water, and fireworks. It will be a truly beautiful thing with this world-famous postcard, Sugarloaf Mountain,” he enthused.
Designed to impress, the tree offers daily attractions including a mesmerizing “ballet of waters” and captivating light shows, in addition to its nightly illumination.
Daily Attractions:
- Tree Lighting: 7:00 PM to 12:00 AM
- Water Ballet: From 7:00 PM onwards, every 30 minutes
- Light Show: From 7:00 PM onwards, every 30 minutes
A Boost for Carioca Pride and Tourism
The project, realized by Accioly Participações under the entrepreneur Alexandre Accioly, is about more than just holiday cheer. “It is important for the self-esteem of Cariocas and to bring tourists to the new city, which should be increasingly strong economically. We need to create experiences for tourists,” said Accioly at the project’s launch.
The inauguration night was a celebration in itself, featuring a show from 5:00 PM with the “Samba em Família” project, showcasing the Samba Orchestra with Pretinho da Serrinha and special appearances by Belo and Rachell Luz.
This new Christmas tree is more than just a decoration; it’s a testament to Rio’s vibrant spirit and its continuous effort to enchant both locals and visitors alike. Make sure to experience this magical spectacle if you’re in Rio this holiday season!
